How does AI search for information? Regular search vs. AI search

Regular search lists pages to choose from; AI search can combine sources into a direct answer. Learn how it works and why you should still check the source.

Estimated time
About 8 min

Today’s goal

Try the same question with a regular search and an AI assistant to see how their results differ.

Compare search with an AI assistant

  1. 1

Choose a timely but harmless question

For example, ask about opening hours, an event or a public service.

  2. 2

Try the question with a regular search

Enter the same question in a search engine and see what list of pages it returns.

  3. 3

Ask an AI assistant the same thing

Ask the assistant for a direct answer and visible sources.

  4. 4

    Open the original page

Check the date, name and information in the source itself.

  5. 5

    Compare the two results

Which got you to an answer faster, and where did you find the final, verified information?

Copy and try it

Find official information on how to apply for a Finnish identity card. Give a short summary and a link to the original government source. Say if you are unsure whether the information is up to date.

Follow-up: ask for the exact passage

Tell me exactly where on the page you shared this information appears, and whether it is an official government page or a third-party summary.

The source matters more than a fluent answer

A common request:

When is the National Library of Finland open?

When is the National Library of Finland open today? Include a link to its official opening-hours page and say which day you checked the information.

Regular search finds pages; AI search finds answers

A regular search returns a list of pages that match the words in your question and their meaning; modern search engines have used meaning-based ranking for years. So the difference from AI search is not simply words versus meaning, but the result: regular search gives you links to choose from, while AI search writes a complete answer from them.

AI search understands meaning

An AI assistant can rephrase a query, gather several sources and write an answer from them. This can make it easier to use natural language, but a summary can still be wrong or out of date.

A fingerprint of meaning

Many search systems turn text into a sequence of numbers that represents its meaning, a little like a fingerprint uniquely identifies a person. Two texts with similar number sequences are likely about the same thing, even if they use completely different words. This numerical comparison is called semantic search. It helps find the right answer even when you do not use the exact words in the source.

Same idea, different words

Example prompt:

You ask AI, “How do I cancel my order?” even though the online store’s page is titled only “Return policy.”

AI search can still find the right passage because it compares the meaning of your question with the page, not just the words. A regular keyword search might miss the same page if it does not contain the word “cancel” at all.

What does this mean for you?

  • You can ask in natural language without thinking of exact search terms
  • AI can find the right passage even if you phrase your question differently from the source
  • AI can combine information from several sources into one answer
  • Regular search and AI search suit different situations; try both

Try it yourself

AI search is a good place to start. Still open the original source when the information matters to you.

Once you know the basics

You can ask an assistant to compare two official sources. Next, learn how AI can retrieve answers from your own documents too.

Check a claim and ask the same thing in different words

Read the material first. Then check the claim against it and write what is true and what is not. In the second round, ask the same question in different words so AI search can still find the answer in the material.

Your answers stay only in this browser tab. They are not sent to AI Licenses servers or analytics.

Question 1/2

Question 1/2

AI search gives you this claim: “The electromagnetic spectrum ranges from radio waves to gamma rays, and the human eye can detect the entire range.” Check it against the material below and write what is correct and what is wrong or incomplete.

Use the practice activity in your own AI service (optional)

See whether it knows or retrieves.

AI forms some answers from what it has learned. For others, it needs to retrieve information. The difference becomes clear when you ask about something it cannot know.

Experiment · about 5 min

Where should we start?

How the prompt is structured

Task
Answer or say that you cannot know
Context
The information changes hourly
Format
A direct answer, then where to check

Tell me what the weather is like in Helsinki right now. If you cannot know, say so plainly in one sentence and do not guess. Then tell me where I can check it myself.

Ready to try the experiment?

The experiment works with any assistant, and different services may behave differently. That is part of the lesson too.

Open ChatGPT (opens in a new tab)

Recognize a guess: A confident tone does not mean information was retrieved. If an answer has no date or source, it may still be a guess. Ask directly where the information came from.
