Start by identifying the Copilot you are using
Microsoft uses the Copilot name for several different assistants. So the first useful question is not “what can Copilot do?” but “which account and application am I using it in?”. Once you know this, you can try one small task without private information.
Three different ways to use Copilot
Personal Microsoft Copilot is an everyday conversational assistant. Microsoft 365 Copilot is associated with a work or school account. GitHub Copilot is a programming tool. This guide helps you get started with the first two.
How to try it for the first time with a personal account
Copilot with a personal account is suitable for everyday conversation, brainstorming and editing text.
- 1
Open Copilot with a personal account
Open Copilot in a browser or app. Sign in only if you want to use your own personal account.
- 2
Check which account you are using
A personal account shows your own name or email address. A work or school account usually shows the organisation’s name on the sign-in screen or in Copilot’s menu.
- 3
Choose a harmless first task
Try a shopping list, a polite message or organising a hobby idea, for example.
- 4
Ask for one clear response
State your goal and preferred format, such as three points or a short message.
- 5
Refine it if necessary
Ask for a shorter, friendlier or more practical version.

Open personal Copilot and try it (opens in a new tab)Copilot’s distinctive strength: an image in the same conversation
One distinctive feature of personal Copilot is that you can request an image directly in the same conversation. Images are created using the image generation feature built into Copilot chat, without a separate app — the same personal Microsoft account you already use to sign in to Copilot is enough, and the feature is available free of charge without a work or school account. Try it first — it is the clearest demonstration of what this particular Copilot does differently from many other conversational assistants.
Request an image for a birthday card
Create an image for a friend’s birthday card: a cheerful spring flower meadow in the morning sunshine, in pastel blue and yellow, in a digital watercolour style. Do not add text to the image. Once the image is ready, suggest one short birthday greeting for the inside of the card.
Compatible with: Microsoft Copilot (image generation)
Follow-up request: edit the same image
Create a new version of the same image in the same conversation: change the flower meadow to sunset colours, orange and burgundy, and keep the same digital watercolour style without text in the image. Suggest another, slightly more festive birthday greeting for the inside of this version of the card.
Compatible with: Microsoft Copilot (image generation)
From a tool’s name to checking the account and permissions
A common request:
What can Copilot see?
Try asking this instead:
Make a checklist for identifying the Copilot version I am using. Ask separately about my account, organisation’s instructions, connected services, files and permissions. Mark every item that I need to check myself in settings.
The Copilot name can refer to different services, and access to information depends on the account, settings and organisation’s permissions.
Once you know the basics: Copilot at work or school
With a work or school account, Copilot operates within your organisation’s Microsoft 365 environment: permissions, available features and instructions come from there, rather than from personal account settings. With a personal account, you can manage personalisation and memory yourself in Copilot’s settings; with a work or school account, your organisation determines these.
What to know before trying this with your own mailbox
Copilot uses the content of the email thread you open in Outlook and may also draw on other information from your organisation when needed. Start with a thread whose content you would normally be allowed to share with AI at work — work conversations may also be logged for your organisation’s auditing purposes.
Example: a request integrated into Outlook (if your organisation allows this)
Example prompt:
Copilot in Outlook: “Summarise this email thread in three points and suggest a short reply confirming the time of tomorrow’s meeting.”
Result:
Copilot uses the open email thread and may also draw on other organisational information to create the summary and draft reply. Your organisation’s permissions and settings determine which messages and files Copilot may use for this.
GitHub Copilot is a separate tool
GitHub Copilot is an assistant for programmers within a code editor. If you do not write code yet, you do not need to learn it as part of this guide. It is different from personal Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Write a request that shortens the text without leaving anything out
Write your own request first. The hint and assessment criteria are revealed only after your own attempt or after you choose “I cannot do this yet”. Use only the information in the material in both rounds.
Your written responses stay in this browser tab only. They are not sent to the AI Licenses server or to analytics.
Question 1/2
Question 1/2
Imagine you want AI to shorten the accompanying material to half its original length without losing any of the three stages of non-REM sleep — stage 1, stage 2 and deep sleep. Write one request stating the task, what to keep and the desired length.
Use the practice activity in your own AI service (optional)
Complete one harmless task. First check which Copilot you have.
Copilot behaves differently with personal and work accounts. Use a personal account for this exercise so that the instructions do not conflict.
First round · about 4 min
Where shall we start?
How the request is structured
- Goal
- An invitation to an event
- Content
- Date and time, location, one reason to attend
- Format
- No more than five sentences
- You provide
- Keywords about your event: what, when, where
I will paste a few keywords about my event below: what is happening, when and where. Use them to write an invitation that gives the date and time, the location and one reason to join in. Keep the message to no more than five sentences.
Ready to try the real Copilot?
Copy the request first. Copilot opens in a new tab, and this exercise will be waiting for you here.
One useful rule: With a work or school account, your employer’s own instructions take priority. Start with material you would normally be allowed to share at work.
