The essay is due tomorrow, and you are unsure about your Swedish
Your Swedish course essay is due tomorrow. You have finished writing it, but you are not sure whether the grammar is right, and you do not want to show it to anyone until the mistakes have been corrected. The same need comes up in other ways: you are heading to Stockholm and would like to practise ordering in a café without making your first attempt in front of a real server. AI, such as ChatGPT, can help in both situations: it corrects your text and explains why a particular part changed, and it can chat with you in Swedish as many times as you like without anyone getting tired of the repetition. This does not replace a Swedish course, textbook or teacher — it is extra practice alongside them.
Your goal for this session
Write a short paragraph in Swedish, ask AI to correct it and explain every change, and try one more everyday situation in the same conversation, such as a role-play or vocabulary list.
Write a paragraph and ask for an explanation, not just a correction
- 1
Choose a topic and write 3–5 sentences in Swedish
Write a short paragraph about yourself, your day or your hobby. The text does not have to be polished — the mistakes are the whole point of the exercise.
- 2
Paste the paragraph into the conversation and ask for corrections with explanations
Use the below. It asks AI to request your paragraph first and explain each correction separately, rather than just show a finished version.
- 3
Read every explanation, not just the corrected text
Pause at each correction and check that you understand the rule. If the explanation is unclear, ask for clarification straight away in the same conversation — for example, “I did not understand the word order rule. Explain it again with one new example sentence.”
- 4
Rewrite one sentence yourself
Choose one of the corrected passages and write a similar sentence again in your own words, using the rule you have just learned. This helps you remember the rule better than simply reading the corrected text.
Ask for corrections and explanations, not just corrected text
Act as a Swedish language practice partner. First ask me to write a short paragraph of 3–5 sentences in Swedish on a topic of my choice. Once I have written the paragraph, correct every grammar or vocabulary mistake and explain each correction on its own line in simple words — do not just show the corrected version without explanations. Use only my own text as examples; do not invent new sentences. Finally, tell me which type of mistake I made most often.

What corrections with explanations might look like
Example prompt:
I wrote in Swedish: “Igår jag gick till skolan och sedan jag läste en bok.”
Result:
AI corrected it to: “Igår gick jag till skolan och sedan läste jag en bok.” — and explained the rule: when a sentence starts with a time expression such as igår or sedan, the verb comes immediately after it, followed by the subject. It did more than show the correct version: it named the rule so that you can recognise the same mistake next time.
Everyday situations where Swedish comes in handy
In the following examples, AI does not correct an existing piece of writing, but creates an exercise directly from your request. You can copy a prompt as it is and continue the conversation in your own words.
Vocabulary: order at a café in Sweden
I am going to a café in Stockholm. Make me a list of ten useful Swedish words or phrases I will need when ordering coffee and a small savoury snack. Next to each word or phrase, write the English translation and one short example sentence I could say aloud at the counter. Order the list to follow the stages of ordering: greeting, placing the order, paying and saying thank you.

Start a role-play: a job interview in Swedish
Act as a Swedish-speaking recruiter and interview me for a summer job in a café. Use simple, clear Swedish and ask one question at a time. Wait for my answer before asking the next question. If I use the wrong word or grammatical form, do not interrupt the interview because of it — carry on naturally and bring up any major mistakes only at the end of the interview.

The interview continues in the same conversation when you answer the questions in your own words. When you want to move on, send a new request in the same conversation instead of starting over.
Continue the same interview
Continue the interview. Next, ask me why I want this particular summer job, and wait for my answer before moving on to the next question. Stay in Swedish throughout.

Chat about everyday life without a role
Chat with me in Swedish about my weekend. Ask simple follow-up questions one at a time, use basic everyday vocabulary and do not point out every small mistake during the conversation — at the end, pick just two or three things I should pay attention to in future.

What to check yourself
Have a person check important texts as well
AI can sound fluent and still mix up Finland Swedish and Sweden Swedish vocabulary, or be subtly wrong about a less common grammar rule, especially connections between sentences. When a text is actually going to be used for something important — an exam, a job application or a real recipient — also check it with a teacher, a textbook or a native speaker.
Once you know the basics
Once you are comfortable with corrections and explanations, ask AI to give you a short vocabulary quiz using the words you have just learned: it asks for a word in English, you answer in Swedish, and it tells you straight away whether you are right. You can ask it to increase the difficulty or change the topic, but always answer yourself before reading the correct answer.

Question 1/2
Question 1/2
Imagine you have just written a short paragraph in Swedish that probably contains grammar mistakes, and you do not want to show it to anyone else until AI has helped. Write one request to AI.

Adjust the tone and try a role-play in Swedish
In this exercise, instead of correcting an existing text, you translate a message and adapt its tone, or start a short role-play. Choose a situation and send a follow-up request in the same conversation when you want to continue.
Translate and try a role-play · about 5 min
Choose a situation
How the request is built
- Situation
- A message about being late for a meeting, with two different recipients
- Content
- The reason for being late and the estimated delay are already included in the request as fictional details
- Format
- Two versions side by side, informal and formal
- Learning goal
- Notice which word choices change with the style
I want to send a short message to my colleague in Sweden: I will be about ten minutes late for tomorrow’s meeting because of traffic, and I want to apologise. Write both versions in Swedish: first a relaxed, informal message to a close colleague, then a more formal message to a manager. Label the versions in English and explain in English which Swedish word choices change with the tone.
Ready to try it in a real tool?
Copy the request first. ChatGPT opens in a new tab, and this exercise will be waiting for you here.
Check the tone of important messages: The appropriate tone and level of formality in Swedish vary with the recipient and situation, and AI does not always choose correctly on its own. When a message is going to a real recipient, check the tone yourself or ask someone who knows the situation. For the medical role-play, use fictional details and symptoms, not personal health information. It is language practice; seek real medical advice from a healthcare professional.
